Where in the World?

Born and raised in North Carolina, I can think of no better setting than the place I’ve called home my entire life. The familiarity of its cities, towns, neighborhoods, and schools, along with my love for the people and places of North Carolina, made this choice an easy one.

Local readers will recognize Durham, Butner, and Oxford, as well as the names of people and places woven throughout the story. Some names have been altered. For example, Butner-Stem Elementary School, where I taught for nine years, is identified as Butner Elementary School. However, if you know the area, you’ll likely recognize many of the references.

My research has given me insight into these communities, particularly as they existed in the 1990s. I’ve dug through data, historical records, and personal stories to create an authentic portrayal of a place and time that many of you may remember from your own childhoods.

I didn’t call Granville County home until just before 2000, but I lived and taught there until 2023—twenty-three years filled with wonderful neighbors, excellent schools, and cherished friendships. Granville County will always be home to me.

Prologue

2027

Perfect timing! I arrive at Vic’s on the River just as seating begins, and I’m escorted to a patio table covered by a white tablecloth. The sweet smell of magnolia, centered on the table, adds to the southern charm. The Golden Hour, they call it. Golden sunlight shimmers through the centuries-old oak trees, shade and light dancing along Factor’s Walk. In the distance I hear the Savannah River lapping gently on the shore. Savannah in late spring is the perfect mix of peace and belonging.

I order a crisp Prosecco, and as I take my first sip, I hear the piano softly playing from inside, and the singing reaches my ears. There’s a place for us, Somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air wait for us, somewhere.

I glance up to see the maître d’ escorting someone my way. Someone wearing a yellow dress is walking closely behind him. There’s a time for us, some day there’ll be a time for us. I know the time has finally arrived. As she steps through the open door my world stands still. How could this be?
